RIP Abe

Today, Abe Pollin will be buried.

I think it is safe to say that no other person has had more of an impact in the Washington DC sports, entertainment, real estate and philanthropic landscape than Abe.

He will truly be missed and never forgotten.

Ted Leonsis tribute

Abe Pollin was the bravest man I ever met. A man of courage and compassion, with high levels of personal empathy and integrity.

He showed passion and commitment to our city when no one else would. He consistently showed his love to the fan base and to his extended family -- his employees. And you could take his handshake to the bank.

He was a man of conviction and principles, of strong views and great accomplishment. He was the only world championship holder among the major team ownership groups around town today.

He was the last "don"; the last of the family-man moguls, the last authentic nice guy in business.

Most of all Abe was a family man -- and a man of spirit -- who knew his higher calling and the value of public service. His selflessness and caring are evident around Washington today.

I will treasure our times together and the wonderful advice he always offered to me. I will never forget the sage advice Abe gave me in regard to leading a team as a public trust, nor his memorable counsel of "Ted, don't get too high with the highs or too low with the lows -- as this too shall pass." He was a mentor, a friend and a pioneer in so many ways.

bit nails and grey hair...

Detroit won a nail biter...
Dallas got lucky...
Jacksonville kept it close till the end...

Just a couple points or a couple plays different and most everybody in the elimination league I am in would have gone bye bye...

That 12.8% still alive would be more like 1.2%.

What an amazing football week it was.

FYI: I picked Detroit.

As for my other leagues...

Two weeks in a row, Santa's Little Helpers have scored enough points to beat any of the other 10 teams in the league, only to lose to a no name who got lucky and won top dawg (highest weekly score)... Arrrgh!

My prediction: Todd (currently 4-7) will be the 3rd (no name) team in a row to beat me by somehow miraculously getting the top dawg award. Double Arrrgh!

The Weekend Warriors are rolling right along and after spending the entire season in the middle of the pack are now tied for the lead!

The Pariahs, well, lets just say they are still playing... Just not winning very much....

Oh, and I went 12 - 4 for my predictions last week.

All in all, not too bad.

Starting Line-up Review...

So this month has been really interesting with the stock market and really volatile.

UEPS - Continues to hold good strength and has held up well off it's support levels.

CNU - Has really shot up off it's critical support levels. If you bought in at that point, it was extremely risky but it did pay out well so far.

NTES - Was at a good buy in spot and responded well. But the Chinese government has decided to play bully, and their qtr report was not as quite as stellar as the market wanted, but despite a recent drop, has maintained it's support levels.

GHM - Another stock which has bounced up extremely well off it's support but perhaps a bit too fast. If you bought in, 30% gain in 3 weeks is certainly not too shabby.

IAX - Is still an attractive play on the pet industry and looks to be worth while for a long term play. This stock seems to be in a trading pattern of a good quick rise, followed by a longer (month or two) period of flat performance. I bet in a couple months it will shoot up once again.

Leap Frog Commentary...

The Jets play Leap Frog with MJD!

Obama bows to the world!

And Leonard Nimoys Children

(yes that is his teams name)

blows past me

(Santa's Little Helpers)
in the standings of my commished league and snaps my 4 game win streak and
2 week sweep of all my leagues!

The Redskins learn how to block and Ladell Betts has his best game in years!
In fact, it has been so long since he was the featured back that he was quoted...

"I was just joking on the way over here (post game interview), I didn't remember how to get to this room," Betts said with a smile.

Speaking of the Redskins, We can strike another potential coach off the list...
Gruden has accepted a multi-year contract to stay in the broadcast booth...
But as the Stupid Sports Blog pointed out...

Someone please get them a table or limit viewing to just the head and shoulders!!!

And on the CBS NFL pregame show the announcers were doing a bit where players and personnel were being beamed (AKA Star Trek) to other teams. They ended the bit beaming Cowher to the Browns....

Cowher half screaming, half laughing, was quoted as "BEAM ME BACK!"

So, even though I lost, All this made for a highly illogical and wonderful Fantasy Football Week!

A twist of fate...

So we can add Orton, and Turner to the ever growing list of Ankle biters injuries.

Is it me, or do there seem to be an over whelming amount of injuries to ankles this year?

Looking at last weeks injury report, there were 46, yes 46 !, players with ankle injuries.

Good thing we don't all have brains in our feet!

Now that's more like it!

Today, even though they felt compelled to spot the Broncos 14 easy points, the Redskins decided to show up and play some good ol' fashioned football.

Play calling was better.
Play execution was better.
Play attitude and determination was better.
Trick plays were better.

And they discovered the good ol fashioned smash mouth running styles of Betts and Cartwright make for a good combination.

Rushing ATT YDS TD LG
L. Betts 26 114 1 18
R. Cartwright 9 41 0 17

Well done.

IMPACT !!!

June 18, 2009

Today marks a historic day in the journal of NASA and space exploration.
Today NASA successfully launched its LCROSS rocket and satellite.
This program is designed to find evidence of water on the moon by crashing a rocket into the moon and then observing the impact cloud and site for evidence of water vapor and ice. Which, if found in sufficient quantities, will enable scientists to successfully colonize the moon.

A truly historic event.

October 9th, 2009

Today NASA announced that the LCROSS program has successfully impacted the moon and scientists are eagerly awaiting satellite data.

November 2009.

NASA announces significant water was found on the moon! The moon colonization program can progress to its next logical stage!

December 2009.

NASA announces that as a result of the lunar impact, they will be more prepared and ready to colonize the next moon they find.

Much thanks to SAM for the divine inspiration.

Well that's just Fine!

So the NFL has gotten around to handing out fines for the Landry - Smith - Hall incident last week.

Smith $15K
Landry $7.5K
Haynesworth $5K
Fish (not Abe Vigoda) $2K

First of all, Smith is a total JERK and $15k hardly seems enough...
Second of all, Ryan and Landry were still technically in bounds...

Dear Mr. Commissioner,

Football is a contact sport! LET THEM PLAY!!!

Third, I love hate how it took a fight, odds of 20 to 1, to even begin to get some redskins spun up to come to the aid of a fellow player.

I give Haynesworth and the defensive line a whole bunch of credit for manning up and at least putting on a good show of support. All be it a bit late...

After all, we all know that the offense can't defend anybody...

Got a little Captain in You?

Personally I think we could all use some more captain...

In hopes of raising brand awareness, Captain Morgan intended to offer lucrative charity contributions in exchange for each instance a player was caught on camera doing its pose during a game. The contributions were earmarked for the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund – a non-profit which helps retired NFL players with various hardships after leaving the game.

“The [ad campaign] has been going around internally for a while and [Celek] learned of the program through his contact at Diageo [Captain Morgan’s parent company],” said Glenn Lehrman, an account director at Rogers & Cowan, the Los Angeles based firm that handles Captain Morgan promotions. “Brent said, ‘You know what, if I get the opportunity, I’m going to go ahead and do it.’ He sort of beat us to the punch, but we’re certainly not going to complain.”

The campaign was set to be unveiled next week and was fairly simple: For every time a player was caught on camera striking the “Captain Morgan” during a regular season game, $10,000 would be donated to Gridiron Greats. For each instance in the playoffs, the donation would elevate to $25,000. And for instances in the Super Bowl, the bounty was slated to hit $100,000 per pose.

But when the NFL caught wind of the plan this week, it promptly put the breaks on the promotion, notifying Gridiron Greats and Captain Morgan that it wouldn’t tolerate the pose during NFL games. And while Celek won’t be fined for doing it Sunday, a league source also told Yahoo! Sports that striking the pose in future games will result in a “significant” penalty.

Cute and Classic Predictions

OK, so I was channel surfing last night and came across a movie just starting up and I stopped only because the intro was of old style graphic designs and panoramas of NY City, traffic and people.

And I thought, wow, this is an old movie. The graphics are so primitive.

Everything was very plain vanilla and very boxy in detail.

The movie opening started out from a distance, zooming in closer and closer into the city until it faded into a real camera shot of an old brownstone and open window.

Yes the whole movie was/is a cute chick flick but the really cute techie part that got me smiling, and subsequently hooked into watching yet again, was the opening scenes where the characters click on a connect icon on the PC, you hear the dial tone and numbered tones over the phone line, the hissing of the dial up modems negotiating the connection and the "ding" for getting online.

And then the iconic "you've got mail" sound bit.

Classic!

I'm such a nerd...

And now for my cute and classic predictions...

Chicago Bears @ San Francisco 49ers = 49ers

Buffalo Bills @ Tennessee Titans = TITANS

New Orleans Saints @ St. Louis Rams = SAINTS

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Miami Dolphins = DOLPHINS

Detroit Lions @ Minnesota Vikings = VIKINGS

Jacksonville Jaguars @ New York Jets = JAGS

Cincinnati Bengals @ Pittsburgh Steelers = STEELERS

Denver Broncos @ Washington Redskins = BRONCOS

Atlanta Falcons @ Carolina Panthers = FALCONS

Kansas City Chiefs @ Oakland Raiders = RAIDERS

Dallas Cowboys @ Green Bay Packers = COWBOYS

Seattle Seahawks @ Arizona Cardinals = CARDINALS

Philadelphia Eagles @ San Diego Chargers = CHARGERS

New England Patriots @ Indianapolis Colts = COLTS

Baltimore Ravens @ Cleveland Browns = RAVENS

Rolling Right Along...

For the second week in a row, I've swept my leagues! 3 for 3!

In the Borderless League (Santa's Little Helpers) I am in a tie for first place at 7 and 2. In fact, both divisions have co-leaders (4 teams in all) at 7 and 2. The competition is certainly fierce in this league.

In my other leagues...

The Pariahs are looking much better now that others tried to go trade raiding and inadvertently made me stronger.

And the Weekend Warriors are turning around just in time and showing up point wise.

And in my elimination league the Redskins stayed true to form and did not disappoint me! In fact, it may be worth while to pick their opponents for the rest of the season! Way to Go Skins!!!

I want to be King....

OK,

I've have a small secret confession to reveal.

I've said all along that I am in 3 fantasy leagues.

Truth is, I am in 4....

GASP!

I also signed up for this elimination league.

The idea is simple, yet intriguing, and incredibly challenging all at the same time.

You get to pick one team each week that you think is going to win.

Easy.

But... There is always a but...

Once you pick that team, you can never pick that team again for the rest of the season. Including the playoffs and the Super Bowl!

The idea is to pick a winning team each week through the whole season, playoffs and ultimately the super bowl. All without repeating a team.

If the team you pick wins, you advance to play again.
If the team you pick looses or ties, you are out.

Last player picking wins. Or in this case; is "King of the Mountain".

So, how have I done.

Well, I have survived; but not without some nail biters...

First nail biter was Redskins vs Rams. The Skins managed to eek out a win 9 - 7.

Next nail victim game was Bengals vs Browns. A close one 23 - 20.

Not to be out done... the Cowboys decided they needed and extra quarter to defeat the Chiefs in week 5.

And seeing that OT was the way to give fans a thrilling heart attack, Jacksonville proceeded to do the exact same thing against the Rams in Week 6. Oh and if that was not enough, I had had the Eagles picked to win against the Raiders all week but for some reason, decided to change it the day before...
Oh yeah, that's right... I decided that I was not ready to eliminate the Eagles from being a playoff team yet...

Thankfully the last two weeks have gone smoothly and without any more loss of finger nails.

But, (there's that incredible word again)...

Now it seems to be getting tougher. Now it seems that one has to think more and more about the potential playoff teams. Trouble is, at this point in time, there are is a ton of unpredictable potential when it comes to the playoffs and how well a team is or is not going to do on any given week.

This week is the first that it struck me as "getting difficult". I still think there are a couple "safe" bets but each week from now on will get trickier and trickier...

Who would you pick?

Going to the Game!

No, not the Redskins...

Caps vs. Devils !!!

So my boys are getting to be addicted hockey fanatics and watch just about every Caps game on TV.

Though not as hooked as they are, I too am a fan of the caps.

Now since none of us have ever been to a game before, I thought it a good idea to see if I could score some tickets.

Originally I was considering a game close to my birthday in December. The Caps play division rival Carolina on the 11th which would be great, except the only set of 3 tickets left available were on the Club level. Great seats, but lots of $$$.

So I looked around at other games in December and came up with the Jersey Devils on the 26th. And low and behold, they had 3 decently priced tickets available in the top section near the corner. Perfect! A good game which makes for a great combination birthday and Christmas present to myself and the boys.

Hey! I'm already done with half my Christmas shopping!!! ;-)

Of course, now I need some good Caps gear to wear to the game... hint hint...

If I had 2 billion dollars
(If I had 2 billion dollars)
I'd buy you a house
(I would buy you a house)
If I had 2 billion dollars
(If I had 2 billion dollars)
I'd buy you players for your house
(Maybe a nice starting pitcher or first baseman)
And if I had 2 billion dollars
(If I had 2 billion dollars)
Well, I'd buy you a bullpen
(A nice reliant bridge to Mo)
If I had 2 billion dollars I'd buy your title

If I had 2 billion dollars
I'd build $5,000 seats in our yard
If I had 2 billion dollars
You could take out a loan, it wouldn't be that hard
If I had 2 billion dollars
Maybe we could put like a little tiny monument park in there somewhere
You know, we could just go up there and hang out
Like hang out with the ghosts and stuff
There would be fat guys in zubaz pants already there for us
Wearing jersey T-shirts with names on the back

They have jerseys with names on the back but the uniforms don't?
Well, can you blame 'em
Uh, yeah

If I had 2 billion dollars
(If I had 2 billion dollars)
Well, I'd buy you Carl Pavano
(But we'd DL him for three years because that's cruel)
And if I had 2 billion dollars
(If I had 2 billion dollars)
Well, I'd buy you an exotic vet
(Yep, like The Rocket or Abreu)
And if I had 2 billion dollars
(If I had 2 billion dollars)
Well, I'd buy you Gary Sheffield's remains
(Ooh, all them crazy drug-riddled bones)
And If I had 2 million dollars I'd buy your title

If I had 2 billion dollars
We wouldn't have to worry about scouting
If I had 2 billion dollars
Now, we'd pay A.J. Burnett a whole lot more
If I had 2 billion dollars
We wouldn't have a consistent winner
But we would have just one winner
Of course we would, it's just simple probability
And buy really expensive middle relievers
That’s right, all the fanciest relie....Paul Quantrill!
Mmmmmm, Mmmm-Hmmm

If I had 2 billion dollars
(If I had 2 billion dollars)
Well, I'd buy you a Moose
(But not a real moose, that's cruel)
And if I had 2 billion dollars
(If I had 2 billion dollars)
Well, I'd buy you a mercenary
(A Giambi or a Mondesi)
If I had 2 billion dollars
(If I had 2 billion dollars)
Well, I'd buy you some steroids
(Haven't you always wanted some steroids?)

If I had 2 billion dollars
I’d buy your title

If I had 2 billion dollars, If I had 2 billion dollars
If I had 2 billion dollars, If I had 2 billion dollars
If I had 2 billion dollars
I'd be champs

My absolute predictions !!!

Yes, I know there are two ways to spell absolut.
But, this post is just to show that there is some proof to my predictions...

First Stocks:

I highlighted a couple stocks from my watch lists the last few days and since then they have done quite nicely.

From my "It's About Time" post on the 1st.

NTES Netease.com Inc
Time to buy back in. Recently seems to have bounced off of a good support low. They report earnings on the 18th.

GHM Graham Corp
Good well run company up over 30% for year - good pipeline - reports and recently pulled back to a more attractive potential buy in level.

CHNG China Natural Gas Inc
Leveling off after slight pull back and reports on the 9th.

CTFO China TransInfo Technology Corp
This is the big swing stock I mentioned earlier. So, why do I keep it on a watch list? Well, Support levels were at 9 , 8 , 7, 6 (with 6 being the critical one. Peak / Drop (Triangle) pattern has been exaggerated by recent scare. May be ready for a bounce and or recovery. But be careful. It could still go lower to the critical 6 support level.

So, What have they done so far?

NTES up nearly 9%
GHM up nearly 12%
CHNG up nealry 10%
And the risky bounce candidate CTFO up nearly 20%.

Gee, now it's time for me to really go out on a virtual limb, and proof that I have not lifted the glasses one too many times, and predict this weeks football games.

Here ya go:

Washington Redskins @ Atlanta Falcons = FALCONS
As much as I'd like to vote for them, I just can't. But I will still go against my predication and hope. There is always hope.

Arizona Cardinals @ Chicago Bears = CARDINALS
Go ahead and disagree with me on this one. I flipped a coin.

Baltimore Ravens @ Cincinnati Bengals = BENGALS
My gut says that the Ravens are a lot better than their record and probably should win, but the Bengals have surprised us before so watch out!

Houston Texans @ Indianapolis Colts = TEXANS
Can anybody say UPSET!

Miami Dolphins @ New England Patriots = PATS
If the Dolphins play up at another level and the Patriots under achieve...
but they will not.

Green Bay Packers @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers = PACKERS
Face it. The bucs just are not that good this year and the Pack is.

Kansas City Chiefs @ Jacksonville Jaguars = JAGS
You know, the only thing worse than the Jacksonville Defense is the Kansas City Offense.
Otherwise, I'd say the Chiefs have a better than average chance.

Carolina Panthers @ New Orleans Saints = SAINTS
The Panthers are better than some people think. But not this much better.

Detroit Lions @ Seattle Seahawks = SEAHAWKS
I always like trying to root for the underdog, but I'm already rooting for the Redskins.

San Diego Chargers @ New York Giants = CHARGERS
The Giants are on a slide and the Chargers are not!

Tennessee Titans @ San Francisco 49ers = 49ers
You know, I have a feeling that the wind in Tennessee is changing, but it still stinks.

Dallas Cowboys @ Philadelphia Eagles = EAGLES
I've said it before and I'll say it again. I hate rooting for either NFC matchup. But anytime I can watch Jerry get steamed because his beloved Cowboys lost, it is worth it.

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Denver Broncos = STEELERS
Denver has had a great start but I just do not see them out playing the Steelers.

Be Good. Do Well. Have Fun.

And stay away from folks who look through the prediction glasses this way...

Taking Stock

So I was cruising around the Internet and came across some articles which seemed related to my watch lists.

Some favor my picks, some not so much...

First there was this article which mentioned CNinsure Inc. (CISG) as a strong buy in ZACKS aggressive growth category.
I have gone against my usual theory and held this stock for over a month; and now that it has gotten some "buy" publicity, I am tempted to hold on to it.

But not so much as to keep all of my position in it.

There are two or three from my watch lists which I have been interested in.

NTES recently bought World of Warcraft and is trying to push into the huge Chinese online and gaming market. Unfortunately, China is pushing back. But there are other markets and the rest of the world to sell to so even though NTES has taken even a bit more of a hit from this potentially bad news, I believe it will work out and allow the stock to recover even more.

China Natural Gas (CHNG) is well positioned within the country to take advantage of growing demand and good pricing. Jim Jubak, from MSN Money, had this article which mentioned the Natural Gas industry as a good potential buy. His take was a bit different than mine, but still caught my attention in that I have a Natural Gas company on my lists.

Graham Corporation (GHM) is a diverse well run company which is well suited to take advantage of various sectors of the economy as they rebound; including the energy fields. They have had a string of decent quarterly reports and have enjoyed slow but steady stock growth over the past year.

Last but not least is this article which lists some interesting stock choices for research AND their list of top 50 stocks for the month of November. Now, I have not done this for each and every month but the one or two times I have tracked them against my watch lists, I have done better.
One of the interesting things I find with this top 50 list is that their screens try to anticipate sectors which will do better as well as well positioned stocks for each of those sectors.
