Thursday was the date for our annual Youth Football Golf Tournament. You might remember last year my team took home the prize for highest score and last place! Last year we had a packed tournament with lots of teams. And even though we came in last place, we all had great fun.

This year, perhaps a sign of the times and the economy, there were only 8 teams. The low turnout was certainly not because of the weather. It was a delightfully cool sunny morning and just about the time it was starting to get hot, a cool front started approaching from the west and kept the skys cloudy. We finished the tournament in 4th place and 2 hours ahead of the approaching rain.

Golf wise, it was a bit frustrating, we had a bunch of real birdie opportunities but did not make any until well into the back 9. If we had, we probably could have been contenders for the top one or two spots. But, we had fun; and like they say, a bad day golfing sure beats a good day at the office.

As it so happened, the low turnout increased our chances in the raffles. My buddy James got a new Nike adjustable 5 wood, Steve got a cap and t-shirt, and I got 4 free rounds at Stoneleigh Golf Course.

I’ve never been there and can’t wait to try it out. Steve says it is a great course, loads of hills, lots of fun, has more blind shots than any course he has ever been on and requires good shot placement. Great, guess I should order that extra-large bag of bright orange golf balls early . . .













Now all I have to do is decide on when to go and who to bring along? But I have plenty of time, the certificate does not expire until December 2011.

No, that is not my age.

Rather, that is my golf score for the first nine holes of golf I've had a chance to play this year.

In fact, it is just about the first time I picked up the clubs period for 2010.

After a month of record setting oppressive heat and humidity, we even hit 100 degrees one day last week, four of us decided to pick the first cool (<90 degree day and low humidity) evening to go for a round of twilight golf at Reston National. And yes, I really did have a shot end up like this one at the base of a tree.

It was the first time I had ever been to Reston National and thoroughly enjoyed it.

It was loads of fun and I only lost one ball!
But I must say that it did make a very impressive splash as it went into the water!

And that is the measure of my success!

Granted, the Philly fan in question was a teenager, so that explains a lot. He even phoned his dad before hand and asked “what would you think about me running out onto the field?”

Dad: “Probably not a good idea”…

Then I got to thinking. This really is not fair.

After all, would we want to taser every fan who ran out onto a sporting venue or
playing field?

But then again, there are instances where fans inexplicably attacked with switch blades…










So, this got me into thinking that maybe we should install remote controlled gun turrets to take care of unruly fans, but that would really not be fair to innocent folks like the kissing bandit. Plus it might add to game time with “unsightly clean-up activity”.

An alternative would be to have paint ball guns installed.

If you have ever been hit with a paint ball while wearing no padding, you know how it feels…

The security detail probably realized he was too fat and slow to catch the average fan and pulled out the taser.

How pathetic!

So, maybe we should institute a minimal physical requirement for security detail.

After doing a bit of research, I came up with the “average” speed of an “average” person’s time for the 40 yard dash…

8.2 seconds. (I even rounded up)

FYI : 1760 yards / mile. Avg walking speed is 2 - 3 mph. Avg power walk is 4 - 6 mph. Avg run is 8 - 12 mph. Lets go with 10 mph.
This translates into 4.88888 yards per second.

In my opinion that is pitifully slow. But then again, I have not tried to run a 40 yard dash in, well forever, but for the sake of this post and my original supposition. . .

Lets go with 10 mph and 8.2 seconds for the 40 yard dash. . .

If you cannot consistently beat the average speed of 8.2 seconds in the 40 yard dash, you are not allowed to be part of the security detail for ANY sporting event !!!

Amazed, you'll be....

Believe it or not, there is more going on than just March Madness, Brackets, and Health care Reform.




There is also the US Census taking place.

Now how does this tie into Sports and Stocks?

Read on, and you will find out....

First of all the US Census is comprised of only 10 simple questions and you can not fill them out online. So if you get an email saying click here to complete the census, don't, it's a scam.

The questions are done via paper forms, and in some cases, census takers who go door to door or call (after completing the form if there are any questions or incomplete answers).

NOTE: A census taker must follow-up in person with every address that doesn't mail back the form in order to obtain the responses. So, this fact alone should motivate folks to fill out the form and mail it back.

The 2010 Census will help communities receive more than $400 billion in federal funds each year for things like:
Hospitals
Job training centers
Schools
Senior centers
Bridges, tunnels and other-public works projects
Emergency services
The data collected by the census also help determine the number of seats your state has in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Obviously the more accurate the data, hopefully, the more efficient government will be in allocating these funds and programs.

Distilled demographic data also benefits businesses. Here is one such example...

When an owner of 48 Subway stores throughout Arizona looks at the data, he can realize that in west Phoenix, where there is a large Hispanic presence, Fanta would be a big seller. In suburban Tucson, home to a lot of families with children, Hi-C pink lemonade sells well. Populations with a lot of older folks, on the other hand, seem to prefer root beer and Cherry Coke. Soda selection isn't just a question of regional tastes, but a major revenue driver. Sandwich price points like the $5 Footlong may bring customers into the store, but selling added drinks -- that's where you make the money.

Here, someone has taken census data, combined it with business / market knowledge, and applied the result to help boost business returns. And for any publicly traded stock, this would improve the performance of the stock in terms of quarterly profits and returns on investments.

This got me into thinking that there are obvious limitations to only ten questions and paper format of the US Census. There must be a ton of other information already out there, available, (such as the marketing knowledge of the Subway owner) which could be useful information.

Also, there should be more efficient ways of accurately collecting and analyzing data on a regular basis and it probably already exists.

Heck, we already pay taxes, both federally and locally, so the government already has primary and dependent information as well as ages and location of those of us who pay taxes.

Note: Right about this time in my thought process my cell phone rang.


Almost everyone I know has some sort of electronic communication device which they carry with them almost everywhere.

Residency information, Names, ages, family members (see "friends and family" promotions) could be collected as well as GPS information.

Not to mention that there are a ton of "social networking sites" out there which also have various information available.

Now I am not advocating disclosing specific information, that would be illegal. But the data could be mined and distilled, as census data is, to produce statistics, which can be disclosed.

Oh, and speaking of Cell phones...

Note to Tiger: Leave your Phone or PDA home at the masters. We don't care whether or not you win or lose, but guaranteed, the media will care if anybody sees you texting while playing golf!

Of course, we could all just get tiny little micro chips implanted in us and all that sort of information could be collected instantaneously. And don't worry about the cost of the procedure, I'm sure it would be covered under the new Universal Health care Reform Act.

Sorry, I digress just a bit... Now on to the rest of my Census post...

Then I got into thinking that there must be other country census's taken and I wondered what sort of data they collected.

For instance, in NZ, they collect data on similar things such as the USA, but they also collect data on Religion, Incomes, Education, and a whole lot more!

And right about then my wife forwarded me an email about a guy who got an Official UK apology from the UK Job office about Anti-Jedi Discrimination.

A believer in the Jedi religion won an apology from a job center that threw him out for refusing to remove his hood.

They apologized, adding: "We are committed to provide a customer service which embraces diversity and respects customers' religion."

Chris said: "I was just standing up for my beliefs. Muslims can walk around in whatever religious gear they like, so why can't I?"

It states that the NZ Census considers such religious classifications as "Wicca" to be valid but that Jediism is not.

Perhaps if more census data was collected here in the United States there could be more and better representation of the population and accurate demographics for all.

After all, I bet there are some Jedi believers here among us now and we don't even know it.

Bogey on 11

What are the basics of golf etiquette?

Within the USGA Rules of Golf, there are core golf etiquette's that are ingrained into the very essence of golf:

Safety: Be aware of the players in your group, others on the course and yourself. Never take any action that could endanger anyone.

This includes landing an airplane in the middle of the fairway while golfers are playing...

Consideration of other players:
Show consideration of your actions by not disrupting anyone through excessive movement, talking and unnecessary noise.
On the putting green, be sure not to stand in nor cast a shadow through the line of someone’s putt.

Actually, the plane had run out of gas so technically, it was not making a lot of noise...

Pace of Play: Be sure to maintain a good pace of play.

The players on the 11th hole continued play and finished out BEFORE checking on the plane. Kudos!

Course Conditions: Do everything you can to leave the course they way you found it.
Divots – Taking a divot is not bad, but leaving it un-repaired is bad.
Ball marks – make the effort to repair any marks made on the putting surface.

Hmmmm, what about skid marks from the airplane tires.

Anyway, seems everyone in Houston had something to talk about.

This was too funny to pass up . . .
It is a shameless attempt to promote a website and book. (not mine) I would never stoop so low.

Patti Stanger; No she is not Blond (I would have lost that bet) However, yes the author is single (imagine that...), runs one of these "Reality" shows (shows you how much I watch those things), and is filthy rich (which is probably the real reason she has a boyfriend)... Well, I could think of a couple others, but it's not because of her looks.

Perhaps she should have called it "Dating tips for your Daughter"

But anyway . . .

The Top Ten Places To Find A Great Guy (And The Five Places You Won’t)

Here’s a list of the best places to find that manly man:

1. SPORTS BARS –

I know, I know. But if a man is there by himself because his buddies haven’t shown yet, and you know the score of the game that’s on – you just scored yourself some major points! Go by yourself, befriend the bartender, and enjoy the ‘hang out’ atmosphere and who knows what could happen!

a) Wrong! If a guy shows up by himself, he is a lonely looser. Sure, some of his friends might show up later, but there is a reason he is solo.
b) If by some remote chance this does work, at least you know where he will be on Sports Night(s)!
c) Thanks for the tip, If I were single and looking for a career – I’d pick bartender!

2. STEAK HOUSES –

Real men eat meat. Many enjoy a good steak and a martini. The bar or lounge area is a great place to hit during Happy Hour!

a) Yup, single men just love to hit on the waitresses, especially after a couple martinis.

3. DRIVING RANGES –

Golfers like to hit the range after work or on weekends to take out their frustrations on the ball. Don’t worry; you don’t have to be good. Men love to coach, and feel flattered when you compliment them on how much they’re ‘helping you out”.

a) OK there are sooooo many jokes I could do here dealing with the word swing, iron, shot, wood, and in the hole!
b) But I will not.
c) Would one really want their daughter hanging around angry frustrated guys with clubs?

4. MOVIE THEATRES –

Not IN the movie theatre, sitting in the dark, duh! The lines outside – especially for MAN movies (action, horror, westerns, war). Spark up a conversation!

a) So, a single man going to the movies alone, should look for the single woman stalking the lines to see when to cut in and strike up a conversation and score a free ticket!
b) And of course the first place one would want to go with a man you just met would be someplace dark where you were not permitted to talk or turn on your cell phone to call for help!

5. CLASS –

Take a class or two at your local community college – something you enjoy (movies, pottery, books, etc). It’s a great place to meet someone with similar interests.

a) Yup this is where all my friends met their wives (in pottery class) (this lady has watched Ghost one too many times), and the reason they took all those continuing education classes!
b) What about the lonely guy teaching the class? Could be just like going golfing, only indoors . .


6. SUSHI BAR –

It’s the most common place for men to sit down and eat alone. Don’t ask for a table, sit at the bar and make friends with the chef! Who knows who will sit next to you!

a) Chef and Sushi?
b) Don’t real men eat meat?
c) Tip number 2 – become a Chef.

7. SUPERMARKET –

I’m not talking about the cliche of the produce aisle. Go to the prepared food section – most men these days don’t have time to cook. And always go right after work on the weekdays – that’s best pickings! Oh, and a neighborhood market is always better than a giant chain!

a) That’s because all the guys at Giant are married and shopping the Honey Do list.
b) They probably have at least one terrible two or three year old with them as well.

8. INDUSTRY EVENTS –

Find out what industry dominates your town, and even if you have only the slightest of interest, show up at the conferences, lectures and promotional events. Then, find out where the parties are afterwards!

a) In a man’s world we call this an escort service.
b) See Craig’s list.
c) I've heard Bartenders and Hotel Clerks get asked for this information as well...
d) Career tip #3 - Hotel Clerks. . .

9. CIGAR BARS –

They are becoming increasingly popular. Most women can’t stand the smell, but if you’re one of the lucky ones that can – you’ll have your pick of eligible men!

a) Yup, us men love the smell of a good cigar smoking gal!

10. DOG PARKS –

A single guy who takes good care of his dog is usually more open to commitment and responsibility.

a) Wrong! They have a dog because the dog does not care about all the sports bars, cigars, and martini induced nights away.


And a few places not to:

1. AVOID SALONS –

Most straight men spend as little time as possible here.

a) And most straight men who do usually have some sort of fetish.

2. AVOID CLUBS –

Men usually go there for one thing, and it’s not a relationship.

a) See sports bar and steak houses.

3. AVOID FROZEN YOGURT SHOPS –

When’s the last time you heard a guy say, “Hey boys, let’s go get some yogurt! Yeah!”

a) Aren’t these right next to the Sushi Bars?

4. AVOID CRUISE SHIPS –

Single, straight men do not go on cruises with their buddies – it’s something they do with a wife or girlfriend.

a) No, but it is where all the new divorcees go to get away and spend all their x’s alimony.

5. AVOID LAUNDROMATS –

That’s reserved for fantasies and TV shows. It doesn’t happen. If he’s even moderately successful, he won’t have time to hang out in a laundromat.

Saturday - Sunday

Youth Football: Mark catches his first pass !!! And just to clarify, it is the first time one was thrown to him this season. He also recovered a fumble and had a couple good tackles as well! Congratulations!


















And no, this is not Mark...and no I don't have any pictures of this tremendous feat!


Automobile(s): My oldest son Eric says that the guardrail came out of nowhere, did not stop in time and acted like it was moving on ice.... Oh wait, that was him in his car! Everyone is OK, but the right front panel, bumper, and light assembly kinda looks like this....















Sunday - Monday

First, I'd like to thank the weather channel for taking special note of our scheduled Golf Tournament on Monday to benefit said Youth Football League...















It did not rain at all but as I am about to tell you... It was Windy!!!

This is what the 4th hole looks like on a beautifully calm day!
Monday, the trees were swirling around and the the lake was FULL of white caps from the constant 20+ mile per hour winds.

Add to that the nearly 2 inches of rain we received between Friday and Sunday and; well, the course was prime for this...

















Again, my shot was much more impressive in that the whole ball was completely cratered into the fairway and you could barely see it. I, nor my buddies, have never spent so much time looking for a fairway shot. And again, I really need to get a phone with a camera... Oh, wait, my work will not allow one...

But anyway...

A bad ANY day of golf beats ... well just about anything.. ;-)

We actually had loads of fun and the course was in really good shape. We even won prizes!!! Over all we were 2 under par and came in last place!!!

IF we had done better, we would not have won anything!!! ;-)

Even a bad day is good

You know the old saying that a bad day (fill in the blank) is better than a good day at the office.

I happened to take a look at the weather.com site for the upcoming weekend weather and noticed that they have an option for giving various "conditions" based on the weather forecast.

Well, it seems that when it comes to golf, there is no such thing as a bad day.
Even when there is a chance of getting struck by lightning and a forecast of rain and thunderstorms!!!























I mention this only because I was looking to get in some practice this weekend in preparation for our upcoming charity golf tournament at the end of the month.

I have not even touched my clubs in a long time and do not want to embarrass myself too much.

Apparently when tournament officials raise their hands for silence, they don't mean just the spectators....

Tiger to be fined for criticism of official

CHASKA, Minn. -- Tiger Woods will be fined by the PGA Tour for his public criticism of a rules official after winning the Bridgestone Invitational, a tour official said Monday.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the tour does not publicize fines.

Woods was bothered after his four-shot victory Sunday because he and Padraig Harrington were put on the clock at the par-5 16th. He said that caused Harrington to rush three difficult shots, leading to triple bogey.

European Tour chief referee John Paramor told Woods and Harrington they were being timed.

Woods said he told Harrington after it was over, "I'm sorry that John got in the way of a great battle."

Paramor said the final pairing was well behind most of the back nine, but officials gave them time to catch up. They were still 17 minutes out of position on the 16th tee, when they were put on the clock.

Woods hooked his tee shot, punched out to 178 yards and hit an 8-iron that stopped a foot from the hole for birdie. From the right trees, Harrington hit a 5-iron to the edge of a bunker, went over the green, then hit a flop shot too hard and into the water. The four-shot swing took the drama from one of the most compelling final rounds of the year.

"I don't think that Paddy would have hit the pitch shot that way if he was able to take his time, look at it, analyze it," Woods said. "But he was on the clock, had to get up there quickly and hit it."

Harrington conceded he was rushed, although he said it would be unfair to give the final group preferential treatment.

Section VI-D in the PGA Tour's player handbook says, "It is an obligation of membership to refrain from comments to the news media that unreasonably attack or disparage tournaments, sponsors, fellow members, players or PGA Tour."

There is no such thing as bad publicity...

Oh yeah?
Just ask MJ estate owners, attorneys and his creditors...
In death, MJ is setting all time record sales for his music and performances. And we all know that hype sells. MJ certainly is not the first, nor will he be the last, artist to be worth more dead than alive.
But I digress...

Perhaps I should have started off with a quote from Oscar Wilde...

"There is only one thing worse than being talked about and that is NOT being talked about."

I saw an article the other day about the NFL, Bad Behavior, and Profits.

I'll briefly summarize:
"The NFL is a machine that hums 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year…The more people read, listen and watch NFL-related items, the better… the transgressions and drama of a select few (like Chad Ochocinco, Terrell Owens, and Brett Favre) fuel that machine… the same goes for criminal behavior…Lately, Burress, Stallworth and Vick have been in the headlines. All three made poor choices. All three faced the legal and league music. But all three also kept the NFL in the news and that's so much the better for them and their bottom line."

So this got me to thinking about other sports. Their image, the image of their players, teams and management and what, if any, impact this has on their profits.

I will rule out stuff like MMA and UFC.

But I will start with Hockey.

A large part of Hockey’s attraction is the speed and intensity of the sport and yes, the ‘fights’.
Does this detract from the image of Hockey being a good sport?
Does this detract or add to the financial success of a team or league?
What about the basically good players with incredible talent?
The Crosby's, the Ovechkin's?

How about Baseball?

Accusations about pitchers targeting certain batters?
Managers charging out of the dugouts arguing a call?
Use of Steroids? And the affect on the record books…
Yes there are the "bad boys" in the field of dreams, but there are a few good ones too.

Manny Acta just got fired. Everyone will say it is because of the performance of his team, and yes the lack talent in key areas (like pitching). But some criticized him for his calm demeanor. When was the last time you saw him charge out of the dugout, veins bulging, and dirt flying?

And yes I believe there are probably some players in every sport who use performance enhancing drugs.

But are good competitive personalities, talent and image good enough? Does any team or league have just the good attributes and still remain profitable?

How about golf?

Certainly the fights, drug use, and bad behavior is less of an issue here. Yet when Tiger is on tour, tournament attendance is up 30%, and TV ratings are up nearly 50%.

So, what are everybody thoughts regarding this?

Yes, the NFL is using a double standard by allowing this kind of behavior to continue. Yet at the same time they try to portray the good image of 3 strikes your out rule(s) – Does this apply to murders, manslaughter and federal offenses too?

Am I being to sarcastic?

Am I being too harsh?

Does this even matter?
Is it a financial reality?

If not, then how come the Jacksonville Jaguars have recently advertised a half off pricing for tickets?

Maybe they should recruit Michael Vick instead of cutting prices?

Of course, Vick will most likely end up playing a year in the new football league.

What better way for Vick to earn enough to pay off his debts…

Or for a new fledgling league to even generate enough interest and sales to get off the ground…

Or for the NFL to let him prove himself in addition to paying his dues and then bringing him up to the big leagues once he has passed probation and gone a whole year on good behavior.

That way they get to publicize the good image and recruit hype all at the same time!

'Will you use it to go fishing instead of buying food?' the man asked.' No, I don't waste time fishing, 'the homeless man said. 'I need to spend all my time trying to stay alive.'





'Will you spend this on greens fees at a golf course instead of food?' the man asked. 'Are you NUTS!' replied the homeless man. 'I haven't played golf in 20 years!'




'Will you spend the money looking at beautiful women instead of food?' the man asked.' What kind of pictures would I get for ten lousy bucks?' exclaimed the homeless man.




'Well, 'said the man, 'I'm not going to give you the money. Instead, I'm going to take you home for a terrific dinner cooked by my wife.' The homeless man was astounded.' Won't your wife be furious with you for doing that? I know I'm dirty, and I probably smell pretty disgusting.'

The man replied, 'That's okay. It's important for her to see what a man looks like after he has given up beer, fishing, golf, and women.'

Woods, Obama Are Making Plans for a Very Powerful Pairing in Washington

After winning the AT&T National yesterday at Congressional Country Club, Tiger Woods has done just about everything he wants to in the Washington area. He has played in, and won, Presidents Cups. He has hosted his own tournament, and won it. He participated in the run-up to President Obama's inauguration.

That, though, is where the next step might be. Woods said yesterday, after he won his tournament, that he and Obama have talked about playing golf together -- and they will in the future.

"His schedule and my schedule are a little bit busy," Woods said. "His is really busy. He's got a lot on his plate.

"We'll get it done sometime down the road. I don't know when, but we will definitely do it."

Once that pairing happens, Woods said he has just one other item to check off his to-do list in Washington.

"The only thing I haven't done here," he said, "is go to a Skins game yet, but hopefully I can do that down the road."

Congratulations to Ovechkin!
Just having some fun with the Hart Trophy, Ovechkin reaches out to touch it before pulling his hands back in homage to his "hot stick" celebration.

Ovechkin is the first repeat MVP in more than a decade and only the 11th player to win the Hart multiple times. He earned 115 of a possible 133 first place votes, 103 more than the league's leading scorer, Evgeni Malkin of the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

He also won the Pearson Award; the first player to win the Pearson back-to-back since Jaromir Jagr in 1999-2000. Ovechkin dedicated the Pearson to his grandfather, Nikolay Kabayev.

As one who went to college in North Carolina and now lives in Virginia, I always try to cheer for the local gals and guys.

If you want to root for someone in the non-Tiger/Phil heavyweight class of this week's Umbrella Open, then the amateur Weaver is a perfect place to start and finish. Nothing against the rest of the field, but very few players here can match his backstory.

He won the British Amateur in 2007. He has played in the Masters and the British Open. He squeezed through the nerve-racking U.S. Open qualifier and was a mere 100 yards away from entering the Engineering Hall when the popping sound of gunshots began to echo from inside the building at Virginia Tech.

Perhaps this is why New Yorkers are following him and cheering him on. They can identify with him, what he has been through and how far he has come.

Last time Vegas had a football team, He Hate Me was king. Now they have We Hate He...He being Adam Archuleta.

Adam Archuleta, who the Redskins made the highest paid safety in NFL history back in ‘06, was selected by the still nameless Las Vegas franchise in last night’s UFL draft.

Honestly there is now team name yet, no schedule, and as far as I am concerned...

Really truly could not care less...

PGA

So, this coming week it's actually going to start being a bit more like summer in Washington DC and a little less like anytime in Seattle...

A buddy of mine and I have been trying to get out on the golf course for the past month of May or so, but because of schedules and, more importantly, RAIN! we have not had a chance to do so.

So, I'll start pulling out my gear with hopes that we soon will be hitting the links.

He has a 1/2 price pass at a local public course








which I would not mind trying. I have never been there but I hear it is a good open and easy course.

The place I like to go to is Broad Run Golf.





It is a 9 hole course which plays fairly easily but does have it's fair share of challenges.











The best part about this is the fact that the entire course is only 9 holes.

It only takes a couple hours to play, so if I go early, I can be back way before lunch and have most of the day to do other stuff.

If I end up golfing well, I'm happy.

If I end up not golfing well, I am able to stop mercifully after only 9 holes, not feel bad for paying for 18 and go home and I have the rest of the day to do something else that makes me feel better.
