It's Back !

Monday night was our first football practice for Youth Football.

This year Mark is once again playing and he moves up to the 10 - 12 year old league.

This means he is the low man on the totem pole once again regarding size and strength. So far, he does not mind. But all we did was foot work, stances and drills. No contact yet.

I always think this is the most difficult age group sports wise. It seems you get the most variation in development and so as a result you have some really big strong kids mixed in with ones who are not quite that far along.

Some county leagues have weight limits to go along with the age categories. We do not. In fact we have at least one player on our team from a neighboring county for just this reason.

Of course, some moms think this is a bad idea because then little Jr has to get tackled or try and tackle Goliath. But on the other hand, think how Goliath would feel if he was told he was too fat to play ball. Or if Goliath tried to loose 10 - 15 pounds real quick with some stupid crazy diet which is not good for kids who are still growing.

This always brings me back to the fundamentals of football and team sports. Yes competition is fun but there are right ways to tackle and get tackled and there are wrong ways. There are good concepts of team activities which can be learned and there are bad. Plus, with any sport, the things one can learn on and off the field are equally important.

At this stage, it is more important to learn, participate and have fun; which is what youth sports is all about.

Yes folks, it is football season once again and we are in the full swing of it!

As always, Be Good, Do Well, Have Fun.

Gearing Up

A while back I published a post which talked about different draft strategies.

One of those strategies was to draft on the bye week. I have never tried this in a real draft or season before and thought I'd try it with a couple mock drafts.

Let me say one thing. It is really hard to do this. But after 3 or 4 tries, I finally did it and it did not turn out all that badly.

I was in the highly coveted (NOT !) spot of #6. Listed below is the results of my mock draft/team with the overall pick, player, position, and bye week.

** (6) Team Six - Michael Turner RB 8
** (15) Team Six - Roddy White WR 8
** (26) Team Six - LeSean McCoy RB 8
** (35) Team Six - Joe Flacco QB 8
** (46) Team Six - Jerome Harrison RB 8
** (55) Team Six - Jeremy Maclin WR 8
** (66) Team Six - Eagles D/ST D/ST 8
** (75) Team Six - Marion Barber RB 4
** (86) Team Six - Santana Moss WR 9
** (95) Team Six - Lee Evans WR 6
** (106) Team Six - Cadillac Williams RB 4
** (115) Team Six - Matt Ryan QB 8
** (126) Team Six - Willis McGahee RB 8
** (135) Team Six - Greg Olsen TE 8
** (146) Team Six - Devin Aromashodu WR 8
** (155) Team Six - Garrett Hartley K 10

I probably would have done better with my backups if I had not had to set the draft on autopick after the 7th round (Eagles DST)and take my son Mark here....

Now, this may not look like much, even a bit shady, but believe me, today it was THE PLACE TO BE if you are into football.

You see, this is the county's youth football equipment shed and today was the first day of equipment issue!

We do not have teams set up yet, or even all coaches lined up either...
But we do have almost all the kids we need signed up in order to have a successful season and, we have all the gear!

So Mark and I went over to meet up with a whole bunch of others eagerly looking forward to a new season and to see some old friends and to get fitted for Football!

Here is the result of our very real gear pickup.

Is it football season yet?

Oh, and just in case you were wondering who went where in the draft and how I got sooo lucky with my bye week draft here is the complete results.

You will notice, as is the case with most every mock draft, the noticeable absence of Redskins. In fact I have yet to see any of them go much before 80th.

48 hours

Saturday - Sunday

Youth Football: Mark catches his first pass !!! And just to clarify, it is the first time one was thrown to him this season. He also recovered a fumble and had a couple good tackles as well! Congratulations!

And no, this is not Mark...and no I don't have any pictures of this tremendous feat!

Automobile(s): My oldest son Eric says that the guardrail came out of nowhere, did not stop in time and acted like it was moving on ice.... Oh wait, that was him in his car! Everyone is OK, but the right front panel, bumper, and light assembly kinda looks like this....

Sunday - Monday

First, I'd like to thank the weather channel for taking special note of our scheduled Golf Tournament on Monday to benefit said Youth Football League...

It did not rain at all but as I am about to tell you... It was Windy!!!

See this picture?

This is what the 4th hole looks like on a beautifully calm day!
Monday, the trees were swirling around and the the lake was FULL of white caps from the constant 20+ mile per hour winds.

Add to that the nearly 2 inches of rain we received between Friday and Sunday and; well, the course was prime for this...

Again, my shot was much more impressive in that the whole ball was completely cratered into the fairway and you could barely see it. I, nor my buddies, have never spent so much time looking for a fairway shot. And again, I really need to get a phone with a camera... Oh, wait, my work will not allow one...

But anyway...

A bad ANY day of golf beats ... well just about anything.. ;-)

We actually had loads of fun and the course was in really good shape. We even won prizes!!! Over all we were 2 under par and came in last place!!!

IF we had done better, we would not have won anything!!! ;-)

It's Football Time!

Tuesday marked the first practice of the county youth football league.

Because it is the summer, and in the middle of vacation season and the first practice, we only had about half the team for our first practice.

But we did have fun and did get a lot done!

For some reason, this year they have a rule that every player has to follow the same practice schedule of

day1) shirts and shorts,
day2) light pads
day3) helmets
day4) full pads

I'm not exactly sure why. Maybe because of injury. Maybe because of the summer heat. Maybe because of conditioning.

I don't know. But what I do know is that we have a good mix of players, ages and sizes for the Pee Wee Falcons.

And we are all looking forward to the upcoming season!
